Stephen Hickman

Stephen Hickman has been illustrating science fiction and fantasy for four decades.

Among other publications, his work has appeared in nineteen of the twenty-three SPECTRUM ANNUALS. Two books of his work are available: The Fantasy Art of Stephen Hickman [Donning, 1988]; and Empyrean, The Art of Stephen Hickman [Titan Pub., 2015]. Two of his sculptures of H. P. Lovecraft subjects have been issued by Bowen Designs.

Major exhibitions of his work have included: New Britain Museum of Art in New Britain, Connecticut, 1978; Society of Illustrators show, New York City, 1987; Delaware Art Museum shows in Wilmington, Delaware, 1986 & 1988; Art Space in Raleigh, North Carolina, 1990; Canton Museum of Art, Canton, Ohio in 1991; Olympia and York, New York City in 1991 & 1992; Orlando Science Center in Orlando, Florida, 1991; The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in 2009; and “At The Edge -- Art of the Fantastic,” in Allentown, Pennsylvania, 2012.

Hickman's work has earned him much critical acclaim, including a World Science Fiction Convention’s Hugo Award in 1994 for his work in the U.S. Postal Service’s Space Fantasy Stamp Booklet; six Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists, including one for Artistic Excellence in 2000; and two SPECTRUM Gold Awards in 1995 and 1999. In addition, he has won numerous awards in major convention art shows, including Best in Show at the 25th World Fantasy Convention at Providence, Rhode Island.
